Pharmacy Technician

2015 marked the first time Pharmacy Technicians were registered in New Brunswick. Standardizing education, scope of practice, role definition and legal responsibility of regulated Pharmacy Technicians are important components of the growth process of the pharmacy profession and ensures the profession is practiced safely by qualified individuals.

The aspects of the practice of pharmacy that registered pharmacy technicians may perform is outlined in Regulation 20.6.

Only those individuals registered with the New Brunswick College of Pharmacists may use the titles Pharmacy Technician Student or Pharmacy Technician.

REGISTER AS A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN IN NEW BRUNSWICK (NEW GRADUATE)

Please refer to Regulations 12.1, 12.2 and 12.20

An applicant for registration as a pharmacy technician must be already licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in another Canada jurisdiction or be a graduate of a CCAPP or ACPE accredited entry-level pharmacy technician education program in Canada or the United States. 

For this application, you will need the following items to upload to your online form: 

  • Proof of identity (Canadian citizen, landed immigrant or holds a valid employment visa or valid Canadian work permit)
    • Must provide the College with an original notarized photocopy of a Canadian government issued photo ID (driver’s license or passport) by mail or in person.
  • Canadian Criminal Record Check (dated within the last 6 months)
    • Acceptable formats as follows:
      • Local police or RCMP office – original criminal record check document must be mailed or dropped off in person at the College office.
      • Online criminal record checks from mybackcheck.com (no original document needed). Once you receive your results, you can share them through the www.mybackcheck.com website to the College’s account (New Brunswick College of Pharmacists).
    • Diploma
      • Please provide an original notarized photocopy of your diploma from a CCAPP or ACPE accredited pharmacy technician program.
    • Proof of personal professional liability insurance as a Pharmacy Technician
      • Minimum amounts required for insurance:
        • $1 million per occurrence
        • $2 million annual aggregate
      • Proof of certification in First Aid & CPR level C

Step 2)          Complete the application form for Pharmacy Technician (Never previously licensed).

Step 3)          The original documents listed below must be sent to the College. Your application will only be processed once all documents are received in their correct format.

  • Notarized photocopy (original document) of your government issued photo ID.
  • Criminal Record Check (original document)
    • If you have completed your criminal record check through mybackcheck.com, please share those results through your mybackcheck online account to the New Brunswick College of Pharmacists’ account. No original document is needed if you’ve completed your criminal record check through this channel.
  • Notarized photocopy (original document) of your diploma from a CCAPP or ACPE accredited pharmacy technician program.

Apply online if you are:

  • Already licensed as a Pharmacy Technician within Canada [Apply now]
  • Not yet licensed in Canada but have studied in Canada or the US (e.g., a new graduate) [Apply now]

    According to NBCP Regulation 12.19(3), a requirement of registration as a Pharmacy Technician is to perform a minimum of 14 weeks of practical training under the supervision of a preceptor consisting of:

    • Eight (8) weeks (minimum) in a structured practice experience program 
    • Six (6) weeks (minimum) post-graduation training in New Brunswick that is to include: Successful completion of the Structured Practical Evaluation using (SPE) Manual and an independent double check of 500 prescriptions with 100% accuracy.

    NOTE : An Apprenticeship Agreement is required for all time service and must be submitted to the NBCP office before starting a time service period. If work was in another province, the pharmacy regulatory authority in that province must submit a letter on the applicant’s behalf confirming the completed time service in order for it to be considered for licensure in New Brunswick.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN REGISTRATION – ALREADY LICENSED AS A PHARMACY TECHNICIAN WITHIN CANADA (CANADIAN TRANSFER)

      • A letter of standing must be requested from all Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities (PRA) where the applicant was previously licensed. It must be received directly from the PRA.

        • $1 million per occurrence
        • $2 million annual aggregate
      • Proof of certification in First Aid & CPR level C

PHARMACY TECHNICIANS ALREADY LICENSED IN NEW BRUNSWICK

Pharmacy Technicians administering injections:

In accordance with Regulations 22.3-22.5, Pharmacy Technicians on an active direct client care register who have successfully completed an approved training program (CCCEP-Stage II accreditation) may apply for a Technical Permit to Administer Injections.


Annual Renewal

All Pharmacy Technicians must apply annually for license renewal. The online form is accessible beginning November 1 and must be completed no later than November 30 each year to maintain licensure.

Continuous Professional Development

All Pharmacy Technicians must engage in continuous professional development to maintain licensure and must attest to having done so during annual renewal. Read more

Current First Aid and CPR level “C” 

  • Valid certification in First Aid & CPR is a requirement of licensure in New Brunswick for all pharmacy professionals who provide patient care and for registered students who administer injections. *Minimum requirements [LINK
  • New registrants will be required to show proof of certification in order to register and license on a direct client care register.
  • Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians on a direct client care register must certify annually at license renewal that their First Aid & CPR certification, in the required format, is current and valid.
